Keurig Descale Light Won't Turn Off? How to Reset It on Every Model

Keurig Descale Light Won't Turn Off? How to Reset It on Every Model

Quick Answer

On many newer Keurig brewers, the descale light does not turn off because you cleaned the machine. It turns off only after the brewer completes its programmed Descale Mode: a reservoir prepared with descaling solution according to the product directions, brewed until the ADD WATER light comes on, followed by a full reservoir of fresh water brewed the same way. If you ran descaler through it "the normal way," skipped the fresh-water reservoir, or the brewer powered off halfway, the notification stays on. Older models have no Descale Mode and use a different maintenance procedure, so the correct fix depends on which brewer you own.

  1. Find your brewer type below (Descale Mode brewers, classic brewers, or touchscreen brewers).
  2. Enter Descale Mode the official way for your model, with the brewer plugged in and powered off.
  3. Brew the entire solution reservoir until ADD WATER lights up. Don't lift the handle or remove the tank.
  4. Brew an entire fresh-water reservoir the same way. The light goes off during this step.
  5. Still on? Rule out restricted water flow (clogged needles, unseated reservoir), then repeat the full procedure with descaling solution.

Jump to your model: K-Supreme / K-Brew + Chill · K-Slim · K-Slim + ICED / K-Iced Plus · K-Express / K-Iced / Barista Bar · K-Express Essentials · K-Mini Go · K-Duo (Gen 2) · K-Classic / K-Elite / K-Select / K-Café / K-Duo (Gen 1) · SMART brewers

Time: 20 to 75 minutes depending on the model. You will need a descaling solution (half a bottle of GoodCups Descaler, 125 ml / 4.2 fl oz, is one full treatment for any Keurig, so one bottle is two descalings), a 12 to 14 oz ceramic mug, and a sink.

You did everything right. You ran the descaler. You rinsed. The coffee tastes fine. And the DESCALE light is still glowing at you like nothing happened.

This is one of the most common Keurig complaints, and the good news is that it's almost never a broken machine. In most cases the brewer simply hasn't been told, in the specific way it expects, that descaling is finished. This guide walks through every reason the light stays on, model by model, using Keurig's own Use & Care procedures rather than internet folklore. We also explain which "secret button combos" you've seen online are real and which are just retellings of the official Descale Mode sequence.

Why the Descale Light Is On in the First Place

Here's the part most articles get wrong: on many newer Keurigs the descale reminder is a schedule, not a measurement. Keurig's own guides describe it as a maintenance alert driven by a brew counter: the K-Express, K-Express Essentials, K-Iced, K-Iced Plus, K-Iced Essentials, and K-Slim + ICED remind you to descale after every 250 brews; the K-Mini Go and K-Café Barista Bar after every 500. On touchscreen models the same reminder appears as a screen notification instead of a light.

That leads to two consequences you need to understand before you fix anything:

  • The reminder can appear even when scale buildup is still relatively minor. If you use filtered or soft water, a 250-brew reminder may arrive well before performance suffers. The light is a schedule, not a diagnosis.
  • On Descale Mode brewers, the light doesn't go off when the scale is gone. It goes off when the brewer completes its programmed Descale Mode routine. Keurig's guides for these models say it plainly: the full descaling procedure must be completed to turn off the notification. Pouring solution in the tank and brewing a few cups the normal way cleans the boiler but never completes the routine.

Older "classic" Keurigs (K-Classic, K-Select, K-Elite, K-Café, the Gen 1 K-Duo family) work differently. They have no Descale Mode to enter. Their Use & Care Guides don't explain what triggers the reminder; they simply lay out a longer manual procedure (solution brews, a 30-minute soak, at least 12 rinse brews) and expect it to be completed in full. On these models, shortcuts and partial rinses are the usual reason the reminder is still on.

Is the light blinking rather than solid?

A flashing DESCALE light on Descale Mode brewers means the brewer is in Descale Mode and waiting for you to press the flashing BREW button — it is not an error.

A solid light during normal operation is the reminder this article is about.

Step 0: Which Type of Keurig Do You Have?

The fix depends entirely on which of the three families your brewer belongs to. Find yours before doing anything else.

Brewer family Models How the light turns off
A. Descale Mode brewers K-Supreme, K-Supreme Plus, K-Slim, K-Slim + ICED, K-Iced, K-Iced Plus, K-Express, K-Express Essentials, K-Iced Essentials, K-Café Barista Bar, K-Brew + Chill, K-Mini Go, K-Duo (Gen 2, Hot & Iced), K-Duo Essentials (Gen 2, Hot & Iced) Only after a complete Descale Mode cycle entered with a button combo while the brewer is powered off. Normal brewing does not complete the programmed Descale Mode or clear its notification.
B. Classic brewers K-Classic, K-Select, K-Elite, K-Compact, K-Latte, K-Café, K-Café Special Edition, K-Duo (Gen 1), K-Duo Essentials (Gen 1), K-Duo Plus, K-Duo Special Edition No Descale Mode. Keurig's guides require the full manual procedure (solution brews, 30-minute soak, at least 12 rinse brews). If the reminder remains, rule out restricted water flow before repeating.
C. Touchscreen / SMART brewers K-Supreme Plus SMART, K-Supreme SMART, K-Cafe SMART, K-Duo Plus SMART Clears when the on-screen descale routine reaches DESCALE COMPLETE. Started from the notification or from Settings.

Not sure which you have? If your brewer has a row of brew-size buttons and a separate DESCALE light but no screen, it is almost certainly family A if it was made after 2020 (K-Supreme, K-Slim, K-Express, newer Minis) and family B if it's older or has a carafe. If it has a screen, it's family C.

Fix 1: Run the Complete Descale Mode Cycle (Family A)

This is the fix for most Descale Mode brewers. In our experience with customer questions, the light is usually still on because one of these happened:

  • You descaled without entering Descale Mode (brewer was powered on when you started).
  • You stopped after the solution reservoir and never brewed the full fresh-water reservoir.
  • You lifted the handle, pulled the reservoir, or left the brewer idle mid-cycle. Many of these brewers auto-off after 5 minutes without a brew, according to their guides, and an idle brewer may power down or exit the sequence.
  • You brewed until the tank "looked empty" instead of until the ADD WATER light actually illuminated.

The fix is to do it again, exactly as the brewer expects. Every model below follows the same skeleton: power off, hold the combo, brew the whole solution tank, refill with water, brew the whole water tank. Only the buttons differ.

Before you start (all models)

  1. Empty the reservoir. Remove the water filter if you use one, so it doesn't soak in acid. Set it aside.
  2. Pour in half a bottle of GoodCups Descaler (125 ml / 4.2 fl oz), then add fresh water up to the MAX fill line. That's the dose the included GoodCups instructions specify for Keurig brewers. Close the bottle tightly and store it upright; the other half is your next descaling. If you're using Keurig's own solution, follow its bottle: the whole 14 oz bottle plus an equal amount of water.
  3. Make sure there is no pod in the holder and a large ceramic mug (12 to 14 oz, not paper) is on the drip tray.
  4. Leave the brewer plugged in but powered off. This is the step people miss.

Model-by-model: how to enter Descale Mode and when it ends

Procedures verified against the official Keurig® Use & Care Guides linked in the Sources section below. Button layouts can vary by generation, so check the buttons on your brewer against the description in the table.

Model Enter Descale Mode (brewer plugged in, powered OFF) Solution phase Fresh-water phase / when the light clears
K-Supreme, K-Supreme Plus, K-Brew + Chill Hold 8oz + 12oz together for 3 seconds. DESCALE turns solid, BREW flashes. Press BREW. Dump the mug. Repeat until ADD WATER lights. Rinse tank, fill to MAX with water. Press BREW each time it flashes and repeat until the DESCALE light turns off. Brewer exits the mode on its own.
K-Slim Hold 8oz + 12oz for 3 seconds until DESCALE is solid. Press flashing BREW, dump, repeat until ADD WATER. Refill to MAX. Press BREW, repeat until ADD WATER lights a second time. Light off, mode exits.
K-Slim + ICED, K-Iced Plus Power off by holding BREW OVER ICE, then hold 8oz + 12oz for 3 seconds until DESCALE is solid. Same as K-Slim. Same as K-Slim.
K-Express, K-Iced, K-Café Barista Bar Hold 8oz + 12oz for 3 seconds until DESCALE is solid. Press the 12oz button each time it flashes. Repeat until ADD WATER. Rinse and refill to MAX. Keep pressing 12oz until DESCALE turns off. Use a 14 oz mug.
K-Express Essentials, K-Iced Essentials (Gen 1: separate 6, 8, 10 oz buttons) Hold 6oz + 10oz together for 3 seconds. Press the 8oz button each time it flashes. Repeat until ADD WATER. Refill to MAX FILL. Keep pressing 8oz until the DESCALE light turns off.
K-Express Essentials (Gen 2: one SIZE button + BREW) Hold SIZE + BREW together for 5 seconds. Press BREW (8 oz cycles). Repeat until ADD WATER. Refill to MAX FILL. Press BREW repeatedly until the notification turns off.
K-Mini Go Hold 8oz + 12oz for 3 seconds. Press BREW. Usually 2 to 3 brews until ADD WATER. Refill to MAX FILL. Press 12oz + BREW, repeat 12 oz brews until DESCALE turns off. Rinse water may come out lukewarm; that's normal.
K-Duo (Gen 2, Hot & Iced), K-Duo Essentials (Gen 2, Hot & Iced) Hold CUPS + OZ together for 3 seconds. Carafe must be on the plate. Press BREW for the single-serve descale, then BREW again for the carafe descale (a partial brew). ADD WATER lights. Rinse, refill to MAX FILL. Press BREW: single-serve rinse, second single-serve rinse, then carafe rinse. ADD WATER lights, mode exits, DESCALE turns off.

Two K-Express Essentials generations, two combos. If your Essentials has three separate size buttons (6, 8, 10 oz), it's Gen 1: hold 6oz + 10oz. If it has a single SIZE button that cycles through sizes plus a BREW button, it's Gen 2: hold SIZE + BREW for 5 seconds. Using the wrong combo is the most common reason Essentials owners think Descale Mode "doesn't exist" on their machine.

Original K-Mini and K-Mini Plus owners: those two models have no descale indicator at all. If a light is on, it's ADD WATER or the brew light. Descale them on a schedule instead (about 30 to 40 minutes: a solution brew, a second solution brew with a 30-minute soak in the tank, then three water-only brews). The K-Mini Mate has a single BREW button and no brew-size buttons, so there is no combo to hold; follow the single-button procedure in its guide at support.keurig.com.

The three rules that make or break the cycle

  1. Start from OFF. The combo only works with the brewer plugged in and powered off. If it's on, nothing happens and you'll think the combo "doesn't work."
  2. Brew until the light says so, not until the tank looks empty. Stopping before the ADD WATER indicator appears can leave the programmed cycle incomplete.
  3. Don't leave. Lifting the handle, removing the reservoir, or leaving the brewer idle can interrupt the sequence. Stay at the counter and press BREW the moment it flashes.

Fix 2: Complete the Full Manual Procedure (Family B, Classic Brewers)

K-Classic, K-Select, K-Elite, K-Compact, K-Latte, K-Café, K-Café Special Edition, and the Gen 1 K-Duo, K-Duo Essentials, K-Duo Plus, and K-Duo Special Edition have no button combo. There is nothing to "enter." Keurig's guides for these models simply require the complete manual procedure below. Shortcuts can leave the maintenance procedure incomplete, so follow the full sequence before troubleshooting further.

Keurig's own procedure for these models is longer than most people realize. Budget about 45 minutes, and about 75 minutes for the K-Duo family.

  1. Power off. Empty the reservoir and remove the water filter. Pour in half a bottle of descaler (125 ml / 4.2 fl oz) and add fresh water to the MAX line.
  2. Power on and run rinse brews. Choose the largest size, no pod. K-Elite and K-Cafe: use the HOT WATER button. K-Duo family: run one 12 oz pod-side brew, then one 12-cup carafe brew.
  3. Keep going until ADD WATER lights. On classic single-serve models that means the entire reservoir of solution goes through.
  4. Let it sit for at least 30 minutes. Brewer on, solution inside. This soak is the step everyone skips, and it's where stubborn scale in the boiler actually dissolves.
  5. Rinse thoroughly. Discard leftovers, rinse the tank, fill to MAX with fresh water.
  6. Run at least 12 rinse brews at the largest size. You'll refill the tank at least once. Yes, twelve. This is the number in the K-Elite and K-Café manuals. K-Duo family: run four full 12-cup carafe rinses, then refill and run four 12 oz pod-side rinses.

If the reminder remains after the full procedure, first rule out restricted water flow from a clogged needle or an improperly seated reservoir (Fix 5) before repeating the descale. Keurig's guides note that a brewer still dispensing partial cups after two full descaling procedures should go to Customer Service.

Fix 3: Touchscreen Brewers (Family C)

On the K-Supreme Plus SMART, K-Cafe SMART, and other screen models there's no button combo either. The brewer walks you through it:

  1. When the Descale notification appears, press the left arrow and choose CONTINUE. If the notification isn't showing, press both arrows at once to open Settings, then select Descale Mode.
  2. Choose your descaling product size when prompted (pouch or bottle). Follow the screen: add solution, press the flashing BREW to dispense 12 oz, dump, repeat until ADD WATER.
  3. Rinse, refill to MAX, and keep pressing BREW when it flashes until the screen reads DESCALE COMPLETE.

If the screen never reaches DESCALE COMPLETE, the cause is almost always the same as Family A: the reservoir was pulled or the brewer went idle before the water phase finished. Restart from Settings and stay with it.

Fix 4: If Water Flow Stops During Descaling, Follow Keurig's 30-Minute Recovery Step

A heavily scaled brewer sometimes reacts badly to the descaler itself: you see foam, a trickle or no output at all, and hear air blowing. Keurig includes the same recovery step in several Use & Care Guides for exactly this situation, and it is the reason the cycle never finished (and the light never cleared):

  1. Turn off and unplug the brewer.
  2. If there is descaling solution in the reservoir, discard it, rinse the reservoir thoroughly, and refill with fresh water.
  3. Plug the brewer back in, power on, and repeat the fresh-water rinse step. The brewer should return to normal as the solution is rinsed out and the scale is removed.
  4. If the problem persists, let the brewer sit unplugged for at least 30 minutes before continuing with the rinse.

Two things this step is not. It is not a "descale light reset": Keurig's guides describe it as a way to recover a brewer that stopped dispensing, and the notification still clears only when the full procedure is completed afterward. And it is not the "unplug for 10 seconds" trick you'll see online, which has no documented effect on the descale reminder. Power-cycling a brewer is harmless, but if the light is still on after it, the answer is to complete Fix 1, 2, or 3 properly, not to unplug it again.

Fix 5: Rule Out a False Alarm

Slow brewing, partial cups, and a reminder that comes right back are not always scale. Keurig's own troubleshooting sections list the same few culprits first, and they are worth checking before you buy anything or call anyone.

Clogged entrance or exit needle

Coffee grounds and cocoa residue pack into the needles over time. Lift the handle, unplug the brewer, and gently work a straightened paper clip into the entrance needle under the lid (some models have three holes; clear all of them) and into the exit needle at the bottom of the pod holder. Run two water-only brews. If you use a reusable K-Cup, a too-fine grind is the usual reason the exit needle clogs; our grind guide explains what to use instead.

Reservoir not seated

Remove the reservoir, clean the valve at the bottom and the port on the brewer, and press the tank back down until it seats firmly. An improperly seated tank can restrict water supply and cause ADD WATER warnings or slow brewing.

Water filter left in during descaling

Keurig's procedures say to remove the filter before descaling. Acid saturates the charcoal and can restrict flow afterward. If you descaled with the filter in, replace it with a fresh charcoal filter and run a few rinse brews. Prep a new filter properly: soak it in cold water for 5 minutes, rinse under the tap for 30 to 60 seconds to flush loose charcoal and trapped air, then snap it into the holder. A filter installed dry can itself restrict flow for the first few brews.

Brewing partial cups, sputtering, or "air blowing" sounds

That can point to significant scale buildup, especially once the needles and reservoir have been ruled out. Keurig's guidance is to descale twice; if the brewer still brews short cups after two full procedures, contact Customer Service. Keurig's procedures are written for descaling solution, so use one for the second pass rather than vinegar, which can also need extra rinsing to clear its smell. We compared both in Vinegar vs. Descaling Solution.

Fix 6: When It Really Is the Machine

If you have done a complete, uninterrupted Descale Mode cycle (or the full classic procedure) twice with descaling solution, cleared the needles, and reseated the tank, and the light is still on with normal, full-volume brews, then a brewer hardware or control issue becomes much more likely than a technique problem.

  • Keurig brewers carry a one-year limited warranty in the U.S. and Canada. Keurig Customer Service is at 1-866-901-BREW (2739). Have your serial number (under the drip tray or on the bottom) and purchase date ready; they will usually walk you through the procedure once more and then arrange a replacement if the unit is in warranty.
  • Out of warranty, a brewer that brews full cups with a stuck light is safe to keep using. The light is a reminder, not a lockout. Descale on a calendar instead of waiting for the light.

About Those "Secret Reset Combos" You've Seen Online

Search this problem and you'll find dozens of button combinations: hold 8oz and 10oz, hold Strong and 10oz, hold K and 12oz for five seconds, and so on. Here's the honest picture, based on Keurig's Use & Care guides:

  • The real "reset" is entering Descale Mode. On Descale Mode brewers, that's 8oz + 12oz for 3 seconds from OFF (or SIZE + BREW on the K-Express Essentials, CUPS + OZ on the K-Duo Essentials Gen 2). The light goes off when the cycle completes, not when you press the combo. Most viral "reset codes" are just this sequence, half-remembered.
  • There is no documented combo for classic brewers. K-Classic, K-Select, K-Elite, K-Cafe, and the original K-Duo family don't have one in any Keurig manual. If a combo "worked" for someone, it was almost certainly the 12 rinse brews they ran alongside it.
  • Holding buttons on a powered-on brewer does nothing harmful, so trying one won't hurt. Just don't stop there and assume the machine is broken when it doesn't work.

How to Keep the Light From Coming Back

Because the reminder is a brew counter on many models, it will come back after the next 250 (or 500) brews no matter what you do. What you can control is how much scale is waiting when it does, and whether the next cycle goes smoothly.

  • Change the charcoal water filter every 2 months or every 60 tank refills, whichever comes first (Keurig's own schedule). A charcoal filter reduces chlorine, odor, and some impurities that affect taste; it does not meaningfully remove the dissolved calcium and magnesium that form limescale, so it complements descaling rather than replacing it. Twelve-packs cover two years: Keurig-compatible filters, 12-pack. If your brewer never came with a holder, the holder + 12 filters fits K-Supreme, K-Slim, and K-Express, and there's a separate holder for K-Duo, K-Compact, and K-Latte. Not sure your model takes one? See which Keurig models use water filters.
  • Follow your brewer's descale reminder and its Use & Care Guide. Keurig's current guidance is every 3 months or when the notification appears. In hard-water areas, Keurig notes that deposits can build up faster, so descaling may be needed sooner. Full steps for each model are in How to Descale a Keurig.
  • Use filtered or bottled water, not distilled. Keurig's guides recommend bottled or filtered water if you notice chlorine or mineral tastes, and state plainly: do not use distilled water.
  • Run a water-only brew after cocoa, chai, or sweetened pods so sugars don't gum up the needles and mimic scale.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I keep using my Keurig with the descale light on?

Yes. The descale light is a reminder, not a lockout. The brewer will keep working. Heavy scale will eventually cause short cups, slow brewing, and cooler coffee, so treat a persistent light as a prompt to descale properly, not an emergency.

Why did the descale light come back a week after I descaled?

The most common reason is that the previous cycle was never completed the way the brewer expects: Descale Mode wasn't entered, the fresh-water phase was cut short, or the brewer powered off mid-cycle. Run the full procedure for your model again, start to finish. Before you do, clear the entrance and exit needles and reseat the reservoir so restricted flow doesn't interrupt the cycle a second time.

Does vinegar turn off the descale light?

Vinegar doesn't turn any light off; completing the brewer's procedure does. On Descale Mode brewers the light clears when both reservoirs have gone through the cycle, whatever is in the first one. Keurig's Use & Care Guides are written for descaling solution, and vinegar can need additional rinsing to remove its smell and taste. Our full comparison is in Vinegar vs. Descaling Solution.

Does unplugging my Keurig reset the descale light?

Not by itself. Keurig's guides don't describe any unplug-to-reset procedure. The 30-minute unplug you see quoted online comes from Keurig's recovery step for a brewer that stops dispensing during descaling; after it, you still have to finish the fresh-water rinse, and on Descale Mode brewers the notification still clears only when the full procedure is completed. Power-cycling is harmless, but the fix is completing the procedure.

The descale light is flashing, not solid. What does that mean?

On Descale Mode brewers a flashing DESCALE light means you are in Descale Mode and the brewer is waiting for you to press the flashing BREW button. Add solution if you haven't yet, then press BREW. If you entered the mode by accident, brew the reservoir through with plain water and the brewer will exit when the tank empties.

Do I have to remove the water filter before descaling?

Yes. Keurig's procedures say to remove it and set it aside. Descaling acid saturates the charcoal and can slow flow afterward. Put it back (or install a fresh filter) after the fresh-water rinse.

How much descaling solution does a Keurig need?

It depends on the product. Keurig's instructions are written for one 14 oz bottle of their solution plus an equal amount of water, or a 2 oz pouch plus 24 oz of water. GoodCups Descaler is more concentrated: use half a bottle (125 ml / 4.2 fl oz) and fill the reservoir to MAX with fresh water, for every Keurig model. One bottle is two full descalings. Close it tightly and store it upright between uses.

My K-Duo has no Descale Mode combo. How does its light turn off?

The Gen 1 K-Duo, K-Duo Essentials, K-Duo Plus, and K-Duo Special Edition are classic brewers: run a 12 oz pod-side solution brew and a 12-cup carafe solution brew, let the brewer stand 30 minutes, rinse the tank, then run four carafe rinses and four 12 oz pod-side rinses with fresh water. The light clears as normal flow returns. Only the Gen 2 K-Duo Hot & Iced and K-Duo Essentials Hot & Iced have a Descale Mode (hold CUPS + OZ for 3 seconds from OFF).

The Bottom Line

On newer Keurigs, a descale light that won't turn off is usually a procedure problem, not a cleaning problem. The brewer wants to see one specific thing: the complete Descale Mode cycle, from a powered-off start, through the solution reservoir and the fresh-water reservoir, without interruption. On classic models it's the complete manual procedure, soak and twelve rinses included. Do that once, exactly as your model's guide describes, and the light goes off in most cases. If it doesn't, clear the needles, reseat the tank, and do it again. Only after two complete procedures should you treat it as a hardware fault worth a call to Keurig.

Then follow your brewer's reminder, change the filter every two months, and the next time the light appears you'll know exactly what it's asking for.
